The air in Julijona’s small room felt thicker than usual, humming with an energy that had become as familiar as the scent of old paper and dried lavender. The jar of ‘Original Protecting Jelly’ sat on her bedside table, no longer just a curious relic but a conduit, a shimmering promise of truths hidden just beneath the skin of everyday life. Silas’s interference, his clumsy, desperate attempt to snatch the jar and its secrets, had only served to solidify her resolve. It had also, surprisingly, brought the Keeper closer.
Not that “closer” was a concept that applied easily to the Keeper of the Veil. It was more like a resonant frequency, a deep, quiet hum that settled in the marrow of her bones. It had appeared, or rather, manifested more strongly, in the aftermath of Silas’s hurried retreat, a shimmering distortion in the corner of her vision, a voice that wasn’t heard but felt, like a cool breath against her thoughts.
“He seeks to control what he cannot comprehend,” the Keeper’s presence had conveyed, the words forming not in her ears but in the very fabric of her awareness. “The veil is not a prize, but a covenant. And you, Julijona, are its newest signatory.”
