Chapter 11
Silas's Gambit
Silas makes a bolder move, attempting to disrupt Julijona's connection or steal the Vaseline. This confrontation forces Julijona to actively defend herself and her newfound understanding.
The air in Julijona's small apartment crackled with an unseen tension, a static hum that had become as familiar as the scent of old books and brewing tea. Silas had been here earlier, his presence leaving behind a residue of unease, a faint, metallic tang that lingered even after he'd gone. He’d spoken of balance, of the natural order, but his words had been like polished stones, smooth and misleading, hiding sharp edges beneath. Julijona had felt it then, a prickle of warning along her skin, a subtle shift in the way the light fell through her window, as if the world itself was holding its breath.
Now, the hum was louder, more insistent. It vibrated in her fingertips, a restless energy seeking an outlet. She looked at the small, chipped ceramic bowl on her bedside table, the one where she kept the jar of 'Original Protecting Jelly.' It was no longer just Vaseline. It was a key, a conduit, a silent promise. The jar seemed to pulse with a faint, inner light, a soft, pearlescent glow that only she could see.
She picked it up, the cool glass familiar in her palm. The faint scent of rose and something else, something ancient and earthy, wafted from it. Silas had tried to dismiss it, to paint it as a mere curiosity, a child’s plaything. But Julijona knew better. She had seen the whispers, the shimmering threads that connected everything, the invisible currents that Silas so desperately sought to control. He hadn't understood the Vaseline's true nature, or perhaps he had, and that was the more terrifying thought.
