Chapter 9
Mateo's Shadow
Elena witnesses glimpses of Mateo, changed by his time in Atheria. He seems both familiar and alien, caught between his past life and his new, extraordinary existence.
The air in Atheria hummed with a melody only Elena could perceive, a symphony of rustling leaves and the murmur of unseen currents. It was a world painted in hues that defied earthly description, where sunlight filtered through canopies of crystalline foliage, casting an ethereal glow on moss-covered stones. She had walked for what felt like days, though the concept of time here was as fluid as the shimmering rivers that snaked through the landscape. The artifact, nestled in her satchel, pulsed with a gentle warmth, a constant, reassuring thrum against her hip, guiding her deeper into this realm Mateo Garcia, Sergeant Mateo Garcia, had vanished into.
She had seen him. Or rather, she had seen his shadow. A fleeting impression, a ripple in the vibrant tapestry of Atheria that spoke of a presence, a man who was once Mateo. The first instance had been near a waterfall that cascaded not with water, but with liquid moonlight. A figure, tall and broad-shouldered, had been silhouetted against the luminescence, his stance familiar, yet somehow elongated, as if stretched by the very fabric of this place. He had turned, or at least his head had moved in that direction, and for a heart-stopping moment, Elena had felt a gaze lock onto hers, though no eyes were visible, only the faintest shimmer in the air where they should have been.
Then, there was the echo. A voice, rougher, deeper than she remembered, carried on a breeze that smelled of ancient earth and blooming nightshade. It was a fragment, a single word – “Isolde” – spoken with a mixture of reverence and weariness. Elena had frozen, her heart hammering against her ribs. It was Mateo’s voice, undeniably, yet imbued with a resonance that was entirely new, as if the jungle itself had learned to sing through him.
