She’d followed the river, a ribbon of liquid shadow that seemed to beckon her deeper, the artifact nestled in her pack growing warmer with each step. The indigenous guides, their faces etched with a mixture of awe and apprehension, had stopped at the edge of a clearing, their whispers a prayer against the encroaching wonder.
