The sterile quiet of the ward was a familiar hum now, a background melody to Eleanor’s days. It was a sound she no longer fought, but rather, had learned to listen to, discerning the subtle variations that marked the passage of time: the hushed urgency of night shifts, the clatter of breakfast trays, the soft murmur of voices from adjacent rooms. Today, however, the hum was punctuated by a deeper resonance, a rumbling baritone that belonged to Mr. Abernathy. He occupied the bed across the narrow aisle, a man whose presence filled his small space with an almost defiant solidity, despite the frailty that clung to him like a second skin.

Eleanor had, at first, found him rather intimidating. His pronouncements were often delivered with a gruff finality, his gaze, when it met hers, sharp and assessing. He was a long-term resident of this place, a fixture, she suspected, more permanent than the IV stands. He rarely spoke of his illness, preferring instead to comment on the weather outside – a forecast he seemed to divine from the quality of the light filtering through the blinds – or the questionable culinary offerings.

But today, Mr. Abernathy’s voice held a different timbre. It was softer, almost wistful, as he recounted a story to no one in particular, or perhaps to the universe at large. Eleanor, who had been tracing the intricate patterns of the ceiling tiles with her eyes, found her attention drawn to him.
