The sterile air of the hospital room, once a suffocating blanket of despair, now held a different quality. It was still tinged with the scent of antiseptics and the low hum of unseen machinery, but beneath it, something new was stirring. Eleanor felt it like a faint tremor in the earth, a subtle shift in the tectonic plates of her existence. The doctor’s words, delivered with his usual measured cadence, had been delivered days ago, yet they continued to echo in the quiet corners of her mind. “Progress, Mrs. Vance. Small, but measurable.”

Measurable. The word itself felt like a foreign language, a concept she had almost forgotten. For so long, her days had been measured in the relentless march of pain, the agonizing crawl of fatigue, the ever-present shadow of decline. But now, there was this new metric: progress. It wasn't the thunderclap of a miracle cure, no sudden vanquishing of the unseen enemy that had taken root within her. It was more akin to the slow, deliberate unfurling of a tightly bound bud, a hesitant opening to the light.
