Kadja felt it most acutely during the witching hours, the familiar 1 AM to 3 AM window, especially when the moon began its subtle shift. The glowing screens of dormant electronics were a constant, unnerving reminder. Shadows, no longer just shy observers, now seemed to writhe with an almost palpable malevolence, pooling in the living room corners and, most terrifyingly, hovering just above her bedside, stealing her breath with that same, violent cough that had been her unwanted companion for decades.
The move to Bar Harbor had been a desperate attempt, a hope that a new landscape might offer sanctuary, a fresh start free from the suffocating atmosphere of their previous home. But the old Tudor, with its rambling corridors and shadowed nooks, seemed to hold its own secrets, its own brand of torment. Kadja had hoped for a reprieve, a chance to finally breathe freely, but the unseen forces, it seemed, had followed, or perhaps, had simply been waiting.
Her parents, their faces etched with a weariness that went beyond mere fatigue, tried to maintain a semblance of normalcy. Yet, even their attempts at cheerful domesticity felt hollow against the backdrop of the escalating hauntings. Her older brothers, once boisterous boys, now moved with a strange, unsettling quietness, their eyes darting towards shadows that weren't there, their laughter replaced by nervous glances. And Jasper, her beloved cocker spaniel, his tail that once wagged with boundless enthusiasm now tucked between his legs, would whimper and press himself against Kadja’s legs, his soft fur bristling with an unease that mirrored her own.
