The weight of Kadja’s existence pressed down on her, a suffocating blanket woven from years of fear and rejection. Every attempt to forge a connection, to find a place where she belonged, had been met with suspicion, then disdain, and finally, outright abuse. Her gift, the very essence of her being, had become her curse, a beacon that drew only the cruelest of souls. Whispers followed her like a shadow, morphing from childish taunts to venomous accusations. “Freak,” they’d spat, their eyes glinting with a malice that mirrored the unseen forces that had plagued her since infancy. “Witch.” The words were stones, hurled with intent to wound, to break.

Her family, once her sanctuary, had become another source of her despair. Their initial bewilderment had curdled into frustration, then resentment. The constant upheaval, the unsettling occurrences that clung to their lives like a persistent chill, had worn them down. Kadja’s parents, desperate for a semblance of normalcy, had begun to blame her, their own fear twisting into accusations of fault. The dream of a peaceful life, shattered by the unseen hand that guided their daughter’s fate, had led them from one place to another, each move a futile attempt to outrun a destiny that was intrinsically tied to Kadja herself. They had bought land, built a new home, sought refuge in new towns, yet the shadows followed, their tendrils reaching across borders, across provinces, across the very fabric of their lives.

The moves were relentless, each new school a fresh battleground. Sir James Dunn Academy, Saint Stephens High School, Catherine McAuley – the names blurred into a tapestry of isolation and torment. Kadja, a loner by circumstance, would retreat to the solace of forgotten places, like the Revolutionary Torrey Cemetery, finding more comfort in the silent stones than in the jeering crowds. Even then, the bullying persisted, a relentless tide that threatened to drown her. Her family, weary and frayed, had finally made the heart-wrenching decision, a decision born of their own exhaustion and a profound misunderstanding of her plight. They had her attend an all-girls school, a desperate attempt to isolate her, to contain what they perceived as the source of their troubles. But moving, changing schools, changing countries – nothing severed the unseen ties that bound her. It was as if a spirit, ancient and relentless, refused to let her go, clinging to her like a second skin.
