The scent of salt and damp earth clung to the old Tudor home, a comforting aroma for Kadja and her family, a stark contrast to the oppressive atmosphere that had begun to permeate their new lives in Bar Harbor, Maine. They had sought refuge, a fresh start after the tumultuous events that had shaken their foundations. Yet, refuge, it seemed, was a fleeting concept.

It began subtly, a creeping unease that rippled through the community like a chilling fog. At first, it was just the whispers, the hushed conversations that ceased the moment Kadja or her family approached. Then came the averted gazes, the nervous smiles that didn't quite reach the eyes. The once-welcoming doors of their neighbors, which had swung open with genuine warmth upon their arrival, now seemed to hesitate, then close with a polite but firm finality.

Kadja noticed it most acutely in the children. Their boisterous games in the street, once a symphony of youthful energy, now seemed to dissipate whenever she or Wesley passed by. Their mothers, who had initially gushed over Wesley's quiet wisdom and Kadja's serene demeanor, now found excuses to keep their own children close, their smiles tight. There was a palpable fear in the air, a fear that had nothing to do with the spectral remnants they had so bravely confronted, but something far more insidious, something that seeped from the very walls of their new home.
