Leo's Persistent Echo

Leo continues to appear, his presence a constant reminder of the life Elara could have had. He seems to understand her unspoken thoughts, her hidden pain.

The chipped ceramic mug warmed Elara’s hands, a familiar comfort against the encroaching chill of the autumn afternoon. Outside, the leaves, once a riot of amber and crimson, now lay sodden on the pavement, a matted tapestry of decay. It mirrored, she thought with a sigh, the state of her own spirit – a beautiful potential long since faded and trodden underfoot. The scent of brewing tea, a blend of Earl Grey and something vaguely floral she couldn't quite place, usually soothed her, but today it felt thin, like a pale imitation of solace.

Then, a shadow fell across her kitchen table, stretching long and cool from the doorway. Elara’s heart gave a familiar, unwelcome lurch. Leo. He stood there, silhouetted against the brighter light of the hallway, a faint smile playing on his lips, as if he’d been invited. He always seemed to arrive just as the quietest moments settled, like a discordant note in a hushed melody.

“May I?” he asked, his voice a low rumble that always seemed to vibrate somewhere deep within her. He didn’t wait for an answer, of course. He simply walked in, his presence filling the small space, pushing back the familiar, comforting solitude. He moved with an easy grace that Elara had always found both captivating and unsettling.
