The silence in Elara’s small cottage had always been a comfortable blanket, a familiar weight that settled over her shoulders as the day bled into evening. Tonight, however, the silence felt… different. It was no longer a gentle companion but a vast, echoing chamber, amplifying the insistent hum of unspoken questions. The ‘what ifs’ of her life, usually a faint murmur in the background, had risen to a deafening chorus, each one a phantom limb aching with the phantom touch of what might have been.
She sat by the window, the dying embers in the hearth casting dancing shadows that mimicked the turmoil in her heart. Her fingers traced the condensation on the cool glass, a meaningless gesture that nonetheless kept her hands occupied, a small anchor against the tide of memory threatening to pull her under. The teacup beside her had long since gone cold, its contents a dark, uninviting pool, much like the unexplored depths of her own past.
Leo. His name was a sudden, sharp intake of breath, a jolt that sent ripples through the placid surface of her existence. He had appeared like a comet, bright and unexpected, and now the sky of her life felt irrevocably altered. His easy laughter, the way his eyes seemed to hold a universe of understanding, the sheer *presence* of him – it had all chipped away at the carefully constructed walls she’d built around herself. And with each chip, the ghosts of ‘what if’ had found more room to breathe.
