The late afternoon sun cast long, lazy shadows across Dr. Anya Petrova’s tidy desk. Dust motes danced in the golden shafts of light, a silent ballet in the otherwise hushed clinic. Anya traced the faint scar above her eyebrow, a familiar gesture that always accompanied a flicker of unease. The clinic, usually a sanctuary of predictable ailments and gentle recoveries, had begun to feel… different. The cryptic notes, tucked into the pages of medical journals or slipped under her office door, had woven a thread of intrigue into the fabric of her days. Each one, a small, folded piece of paper bearing a few carefully chosen words, felt like a whisper from a forgotten world.

“The fever’s a clever disguise,” one had read, scrawled in elegant, looping script. Another, more recent, simply stated, “He remembers the robin’s song.” They were nonsensical, yet undeniably meant for her. And they were about her patients. A shiver, not entirely unpleasant, traced its way down her spine. Boredom was a distant memory, replaced by a prickling curiosity that felt both exhilarating and a little dangerous.

She’d started to watch them, her patients, with a new intensity. The usual clinical gaze was now layered with a detective’s keen observation. Old Mr. Henderson, complaining of a persistent cough that sounded more like a rumble of distant thunder, had mentioned his prize-winning roses during his last visit. Had that been a clue? And young Lily Davies, whose scraped knee seemed to have healed with unusual speed, had been humming a tuneless melody that Anya couldn't quite place. Was that the robin’s song?
