The world had shrunk to the size of a grimy motel room, the air thick with the stale scent of cigarettes and regret. Each breath felt heavy, a physical manifestation of the weight pressing down on my chest. Outside, the city lights blurred into streaks of neon indifference, mirroring the haze that had settled over my own life. It had been months since I’d seen Aries, months since I’d held him, months since I’d heard his sweet, lisping voice call me Mama. No, it had been the *result*. The gnawing emptiness, the crushing guilt, the sheer, unadulterated terror of losing my son had driven me to seek solace in anything that could numb the pain. And meth, in its insidious, deceptive way, had promised oblivion. It had delivered, for a while, a fleeting escape before dragging me further down into the mire.
