The world swam back into focus with a searing, agonizing clarity. Pain, a blinding white fire, consumed me, every inch of my body screaming in protest. I heard the distant wail of sirens, a sound that seemed to echo the chaos inside my own head. Through the haze, a face appeared, my mother’s face. But instead of the comfort I desperately craved, her eyes held a chilling detachment, a hard glint that reflected none of the unconditional love a mother should offer in such a moment.

“Honestly, Nicole,” she said, her voice flat, devoid of any warmth, “you’re such a mess. Always have been. You can’t even fall down without making a spectacle of yourself.”

The words, sharp and cruel, landed like blows, far more potent than the impact that had sent me spiraling. They burrowed deep, a stark reminder of the chasm that had opened between us, a gulf so wide I wondered if it could ever be bridged. I was broken, physically and emotionally, and the one person who should have rushed to my side, who should have offered solace, instead delivered a judgment that echoed the self-loathing I already carried.
