Chapter 13
Elena's Subtle Sabotage
Elena's scheming begins, planting seeds of discord and subtly hindering the twins' progress. Her troublemaking, however, often backfires in amusing ways.
My twin sister Lyra, bless her perpetually optimistic heart, seemed to think our quest was going swimmingly. "See, Elara?" she chirped, adjusting the ridiculously oversized sack of what Elder Borin *insisted* were "essential provisions" (mostly dried roots and a single, petrified turnip) on her shoulder. "We're practically seasoned adventurers already!"
I, on the other hand, was contemplating the existential dread of a world where even the squirrels seemed to possess more muscle mass than I did. "Seasoned, Lyra? Or just thoroughly seasoned with the dust of every path we've stumbled down?" My voice, as always, was a low hum of weary sarcasm, a stark contrast to her effervescent optimism. Eldoria, a land that thrived on brute strength and flashy magic, had little use for two girls who’d struggle to open a pickle jar.
Our current predicament involved a detour through the Whispering Woods, a place rumoured to be home to trees that gossiped and mushrooms that judged. Lyra, naturally, found this delightful. "Ooh, do you think they'll tell us secrets?" she’d asked, eyes wide with wonder. I’d countered with, "More likely they’ll just tell us we’re not strong enough to *reach* their secrets, Lyra. And then they’ll laugh."
