Grumble's trinkets begin to reveal their purpose, acting as conduits or amplifiers for their magic. They decipher ancient runes, seeking clues to their power's origin.
The dusty shop smelled like old socks and disappointment. Grumble, the merchant with eyes that darted around like trapped moths, had promised “answers.” What he’d delivered was a basket overflowing with what looked like a failed craft fair: a chipped ceramic toad, a necklace made of questionable-looking pebbles, and a hat that seemed to be woven from dried seaweed. Lyra, ever the optimist, had immediately declared the toad “charming.” I, on the other hand, was convinced Grumble was just trying to offload his attic’s refuse onto two unsuspecting, magically-challenged twins.
“So,” I said, picking up a small, tarnished silver bell that emitted a faint, wheezing sound when I jiggled it. “These are supposed to help us understand our… special talent?”
Grumble leered, his smile revealing a surprising number of gold teeth. “Talent, schmalent. Call it what you will. These little beauties,” he gestured vaguely at the basket with a flourish that nearly sent a jar of pickled eyeballs tumbling, “are attuned to the unusual. They resonate with the… ebb and flow of the peculiar.”
