The hum of the café was a fragile shield, a thin veneer of normalcy against the gnawing anxiety that had become Elias’s constant companion. He stirred his lukewarm coffee, the spoon clinking against the ceramic as if to punctuate the relentless rhythm of his fear. Chapter six, Silas Vane’s grip. The title itself felt like a physical weight pressing down on his chest. He’d spent the last few days in a blur of paranoia, each shadow a potential threat, each stranger’s glance a probing accusation. Berlin had been cold, both in temperature and in the chilling efficiency of the syndicate’s pursuit. Anya’s warning had been stark: they were no longer content with simply silencing him; they wanted to dismantle his life, piece by piece.

He’d retreated to a nondescript café in a quiet corner of the city, a place chosen for its anonymity rather than its charm. The air was thick with the scent of roasted beans and stale pastries, a familiar comfort that did little to soothe his frayed nerves. He’d managed to acquire a new burner phone, its plastic casing cool and impersonal against his palm. Anya had arranged it, a silent, almost spectral presence in his life, leaving just enough breadcrumbs for him to find what he needed without ever truly being seen. Her help was a lifeline, but it was also a constant reminder of the dangerous world he’d stumbled into, a world where trust was a currency too volatile to spend carelessly.

He glanced around again, his gaze sweeping over the scattering of patrons. A young couple engrossed in their phones, an elderly man buried in a newspaper, a solitary woman with a book open on her table. Were any of them watching him? The thought was absurd, yet it persisted, a tiny seed of doubt that threatened to sprout into full-blown panic. His meticulous nature, once his greatest asset, now felt like a curse, making him hyper-aware of every detail, every potential deviation from the norm. He traced the rim of his mug, the ceramic rough beneath his fingertip. He was an auditor, a man who dealt in numbers and regulations, not in clandestine meetings and shadowy syndicates. Yet here he was, a fugitive in his own life, chasing ghosts through a labyrinth of encrypted documents and coded threats.
