Chapter 5: The Sum of Her Being
The late afternoon sun, a liquid gold, spilled through the tall, arched windows of the trigonometry room, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air like forgotten theorems. Kristijana sat at her large mahogany desk, the wood worn smooth by countless hours of study, a half-empty cup of tea growing cold beside a stack of well-thumbed geometry texts. The room, usually a sanctuary of ordered thought, felt heavy today, burdened by the weight of unspoken questions. The scent of old paper and lemon polish, usually so comforting, seemed to cling to her like a shroud.
She traced the faded inscription on the spine of a particularly ancient volume: *Euclid's Elements*. It had been her father’s, a man who had believed in the inherent beauty and truth of numbers, in the irrefutable logic that governed the universe. He had taught her to see the world through the lens of geometry, to find solace in the predictable elegance of triangles and the unwavering certainty of parallel lines. But lately, the lines felt blurred, the certainties shaky.
The memory of the conversation with her aunt, Aunt Elena, still echoed in her mind. Aunt Elena, with her practical hands and her even more practical advice, had spoken of things Kristijana found difficult to quantify. Love, loss, the messy, unpredictable currents of human connection. These were not angles to be measured, nor equations to be solved. They were… variables of a different sort, ones that defied her usual methods of analysis.
