Chapter 4
Chapter 4: Unraveling the Variables
The late afternoon sun, a buttery wash of gold, slanted through the tall, mullioned windows of the Trigonometry Room, illuminating dust motes that danced like tiny, forgotten stars. Kristijana sat at her desk, the worn oak smooth beneath her fingertips. The room, a sanctuary and a cage, hummed with the quiet resonance of a life lived amidst theorems and theorems of a different kind – the intricate, often baffling equations of the heart. Her gaze drifted from the complex geometric proofs etched onto a faded chalkboard to the framed photographs scattered across the surface of her desk. Each one a point on a personal graph, a marker of a moment, a relationship, a turning point.
She was attempting, as she often did, to impose order on the chaos of memory. The variables were too many, the constants too elusive. Today, the focus of her dissection was a photograph of her younger sister, Elza, taken on a summer picnic by the lake when they were children. Elza, all wild curls and sun-kissed skin, was mid-laugh, her eyes crinkling at the corners, a perfect parabola of joy. Beside her, a younger Kristijana, her face more serious, her hair pulled back severely, looked on with an almost scientific detachment, as if cataloging Elza’s happiness for future reference.
“You were always so much brighter, Elza,” Kristijana murmured, her voice a soft whisper in the stillness. She traced the outline of her sister’s face with a fingertip. It was a familiar ache, a low thrum of regret that had become a constant in the trigonometry of her soul. Elza, vibrant and impulsive, had been the antithesis of Kristijana’s measured existence. Where Kristijana sought to understand the world through logic and proof, Elza seemed to simply *feel* it, to absorb its colors and its sounds with an uninhibited grace.
