Kristijana traced the dusty spines of books, each one a testament to a life meticulously cataloged, a world reduced to theorems and proofs. The afternoon sun, slanting through the tall, mullioned windows of the study, illuminated motes of dust dancing in the air, like errant variables in an otherwise ordered equation. She had always found solace in precision, in the immutable truths of mathematics. Grief, however, had proven a far more elusive constant, a variable that refused to be neatly contained within any formula she devised.

Her return to this house, her childhood home, had been an attempt to impose order on the chaos that had settled within her after her parents’ passing. She had envisioned it as a sanctuary, a place where she could finally confront the specter of her past, armed with the logic and reason that had served her so well in her academic life. But the house, with its creaking floors and the phantom scent of her mother’s lavender, seemed to exhale a different kind of knowledge, one that defied algebraic manipulation.

She picked up a well-worn copy of Euclid’s *Elements*, its pages brittle with age. Her father’s annotations, precise and elegant, filled the margins. He, too, had been a mathematician, a man who saw the universe as a grand, unfolding proof. Yet, even he, with his formidable intellect, had been unable to conquer the irrationalities of life, the sudden, sharp turns that life had taken, leaving him, and by extension, her, adrift.
