The old oak tree, its branches gnarled like the arthritic fingers of a forgotten god, stood sentinel over the overgrown garden. Kristijana traced the rough bark with her fingertip, the texture a welcome distraction from the swirling vortex of her thoughts. She had come seeking order, a return to the predictable arcs and definitive proofs of her youth, but the house, and indeed the world outside its walls, seemed determined to present her with an unruly chaos of sensory input.
