The locket lay cool and heavy in Kristijana’s palm, its intricate filigree a miniature landscape of forgotten gardens and shadowed pathways. It had yielded its secrets not with the satisfying click of a well-oiled mechanism, but with a sigh, a subtle yielding of metal that felt more like a confession than an opening. The clasp, a tiny, almost invisible hinge, had surrendered under the gentle insistence of her fingertip, revealing not a polished mirror or a faded portrait, but a tightly folded fragment of paper.

Her breath hitched, a small, involuntary sound in the vast silence of the study. The paper was brittle, the ink on it faded to the colour of weak tea, yet the handwriting was starkly familiar, a sharp, angular script that belonged to the man who had been both the architect of her isolation and the silent centre of her intellectual universe: her father. He had left her this house, this labyrinth of books, this legacy of unanswered questions, and now, this final, enigmatic bequest.

With trembling fingers, Kristijana unfolded the paper. It was not a letter, not a confession, but a series of notations, a sequence of symbols that made no immediate sense to her. They looked like fragments of equations, half-formed theorems, a language she recognised as her father’s, but one devoid of context. There were arrows pointing to numbers, circles enclosing letters, and what appeared to be a rudimentary diagram, a series of intersecting lines that seemed to map out… what? A constellation? A blueprint?
