Chapter 4
Whispers in Wood and Metal
Her meticulous probing reveals a hidden compartment. Inside, cryptic notes and a tarnished locket lie waiting, hinting at secrets buried deeper than she imagined.
The scent of aged paper and lemon polish, usually a comforting balm to Kristijana’s senses, felt thin, almost brittle, in the heavy stillness of the afternoon. Sunlight, filtered through the leaded panes of the study window, cast long, distorted shapes across the worn mahogany desk. It was here, amidst the silent company of her father’s books, that the object had landed, a stark interruption to the predictable rhythm of her days. She had traced its contours countless times since its arrival, her fingertips mapping the cool, unyielding planes of dark, polished wood and the intricate filigree of tarnished brass. It was a box, of sorts, an anomaly in a life that prided itself on order, on the predictable arc of a parabola, the steadfast angle of a right triangle.
Her father. The name itself was a ghost, a whisper that had long since faded from the halls of this house, leaving behind only the faint imprint of his intellect, his absence. He had been a man of sharp edges and even sharper theories, a cartographer of the mind who had seemed to chart his own existence with an almost maddening precision, only to disappear from her own coordinates without explanation. Now, this object. It was his legacy, a final, enigmatic theorem delivered to her doorstep.
She picked it up again, turning it over in her hands. The wood was dark, almost black, and impossibly smooth, worn by time and, she suspected, by the same restless hands that had once held her own. The brass inlay, a swirling pattern of what might have been celestial bodies or perhaps some forgotten script, was dull with age, its sheen long since surrendered to the relentless march of oxidation. She had spent the better part of the last two days examining it, her analytical mind, the same one that had once dissected complex equations with an almost fervent joy, now turned to this tangible enigma. She had tapped its surfaces, listened for hollow spaces, measured its dimensions to the millimeter, and even, in a moment of frustrated desperation, subjected it to the subtle vibrations of a tuning fork, hoping for a tell-tale resonance.
