Chapter 8
Facing the Echo
The 'Whispering Wind,' the manifestation of the town's anxieties and forgotten truths, grows stronger. Danguolė must learn to understand and soothe this force, not fight it, to bring peace.
The air in the town square felt thick, heavy with unspoken worries. It wasn’t just the usual autumn chill; this was a different kind of cold, one that seeped into your bones and made you shiver even in the midday sun. Danguolė felt it keenly, a prickling sensation on her skin, like a thousand tiny needles pricking at her awareness. The ‘Whispering Wind,’ as she had begun to think of it, was no longer a gentle murmur; it was a restless sigh that seemed to wrap itself around the town, tugging at loose shingles, rustling leaves with an unusual ferocity, and stirring a deep, unsettling unease in the hearts of its people.
She sat on her usual bench near the old oak, her hands busy with her mending, but her mind was miles away, tracing the invisible currents of distress that flowed through the town. The whispers she usually heard were clear, like distinct voices in a crowded room, offering glimpses into the hidden worries of the baker’s wife or the quiet longing of the postman. But now, the whispers were a chaotic jumble, a cacophony of fear and suspicion. They spoke of flickering lights in empty houses, of objects moving on their own, of hushed arguments overheard in the dead of night. The townspeople, normally so open and friendly, were now casting wary glances at each other, their smiles tight and their conversations strained.
“It’s the wind, Danguolė,” Old Man Hemlock had grumbled, his voice raspy like dry leaves. “Never known it to howl like this, not even in the harshest winters. Something’s not right.”
