The wind, a restless spirit, tugged at the edges of Danguolė’s shawl as she walked through the town square. It carried with it more than just the scent of damp earth and woodsmoke; it carried whispers, faint and fragmented, like secrets caught on the breeze. Lately, these whispers had grown louder, more insistent, mirroring the unease that had settled over her beloved Danguolė like a shroud. The baker’s loaves were turning out flat, the seamstress’s stitches were coming undone, and old Mrs. Petrova swore her prize-winning roses were wilting from sheer fright.

Danguolė felt it too, a prickling sensation on her skin, a subtle dissonance in the air that others seemed to miss. But today, a new thread had woven itself into the tapestry of the oak's memories – a thread of fear, sharp and cold. It was connected, she knew, to the strange happenings that had begun to ripple through Danguolė. A chill, unrelated to the autumn air, snaked down her spine.
