The air in the small, cluttered workshop hung thick with the scent of aged wood and something faintly metallic, like old coins. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of sunlight that pierced the gloom, illuminating a scene of quiet desperation. Ahmad, still clad in his simple tunic and trousers, felt a pang of unease. This was not the den of a common thief, but a craftsman’s sanctuary, albeit one worn down by hardship.

Before him stood the artisan, no longer a shadowy figure in the alley, but a woman with tired eyes and hands calloused from years of diligent work. Her name, she had revealed, was Zaynab. Her shoulders sagged under an invisible weight, and her voice, when she spoke, was raspy, as if unused to sharing her burdens.

“You see, young master,” Zaynab began, her gaze drifting to a collection of unfinished carvings scattered across a workbench, “this curse… it has haunted my family for generations. It began with my great-grandfather, a man of great talent, much like myself, but cursed with an inability to ever truly finish what he began. His masterpieces always crumbled to dust before completion, his patrons lost their fortunes, and my family… we have lived in the shadow of this failure ever since.”
