Chapter 15
Decoding the Final Piece
Anya focuses on the final puzzle fragment. Her logic sharpens as she unravels the Syndicate's location and their ultimate target.
The hotel room was a cocoon of focused silence, broken only by the soft click of Anya’s pen against the desk and the hum of the air conditioning. Outside, the city of Prague glittered under a velvet night sky, its ancient spires and cobbled streets holding secrets far older than the Syndicate. But Anya had no time for romance or history. Before her, spread across the hotel desk like a patient under a microscope, lay the final piece of the puzzle.
It was a Sudoku grid, of course. Nine by nine, elegant and deceptive. But this one was different. The numbers weren’t just numbers; they were coordinates, timestamps, and a cipher key all rolled into one. The Architect had grown bolder, more confident. This puzzle wasn’t hidden in a public forum or a discarded newspaper. It had arrived in a plain envelope, slipped under her door while she and Thorne had been out securing a safe house. A direct challenge. A taunt.
Anya traced a finger over the grid. The standard rules applied: each row, column, and three-by-three box had to contain the digits one through nine exactly once. But the real message was nested in the order of the solution. The first three numbers of each completed row, when converted using a modified Polybius square, spelled out street names. The diagonal from top-left to bottom-right, read as a binary sequence, gave a time. The final column, when interpreted as a date in a Julian calendar variant, pointed to a specific day.
