The Trap Springs
Silas Vance ambushes them at a safe house. A frantic escape leaves Anya injured, but Thorne's quick action saves them both.
The safe house was a cramped studio above a bakery in the old quarter, the scent of sourdough and yeast seeping through the floorboards like a second skin. For three days, it had been their sanctuary—a place where Anya could spread her papers across the scarred wooden table, where Thorne could brew coffee in a chipped percolator, and where the world outside, with its digital tendrils and hidden grids, felt just slightly out of reach.
But Anya knew better. The world was never out of reach. Not for her. Not for the Syndicate.
She was hunched over the table, a pencil in her hand, when the first crackle of static came through the earpiece Thorne had given her. It was a safety line, a direct channel to a surveillance node two blocks away, patched into traffic cameras and street-level microphones. She had barely registered the sound—it was just noise, the city's hum—when a second burst of static sharpened into a voice.
