Thorne reveals his past operation was compromised by a similar code. He vows to prevent history from repeating, deepening his commitment.
The rain had stopped by the time Thorne pulled the car into the underground garage of a nondescript building on the outskirts of the city. Anya had spent the entire drive in silence, her fingers tracing phantom patterns on her thigh, her mind still churning through the implications of the latest puzzle. The one that had mentioned her by name.
Thorne killed the engine, and the sudden quiet pressed against them like a physical weight. He didn't move to get out. Instead, he sat there, both hands gripping the steering wheel, his knuckles pale in the dim light.
"There's something you need to know," he said, his voice low and rough. "Something I should have told you from the beginning."
