The Village's Hidden Logic
The air in the little village pub, usually thick with the comforting scent of rye bread and the murmur of contented chatter, felt different. A subtle tension, like a misplaced number in a Sudoku grid, had settled over it. Jonas, his brow furrowed deeper than usual, tapped his pencil against the half-finished puzzle in front of him. Elena, her needles clicking a worried rhythm against her knitting, watched him. Algirdas, his normally cheerful face clouded with unease, sipped his kvass slowly, his gaze distant.
“It’s not just one thing, is it?” Jonas finally said, his voice low. “The missing prize-winning pumpkin, Mrs. Petrova’s best lace shawl, even old Father Michael’s favorite wooden cross… they’re all gone. And each time, something odd happened before, something that felt… planned.”
Elena nodded, her eyes catching the glint of the pub’s dim lamplight. “And the numbers, Jonas. Remember how the numbers were all jumbled on the bakery’s sign the day the pumpkin vanished? And then, the day the shawl disappeared, the village clock seemed to be stuck on a peculiar time for a whole hour.”
