The air in Professor Finch’s study was thick with the scent of old paper and lemon polish, a comforting aroma that always made Elara feel a little more grounded. Sunlight, fractured by the leaded panes of the window, danced across stacks of books that seemed to lean against each other like sleepy giants. Elara traced the spine of a particularly ancient-looking tome, its leather cover cracked and faded like a forgotten map. She had spent the last hour poring over the symbols and diagrams Professor Finch had shown her, remnants of her grandfather’s research, and each one felt like a new door opening into a room she never knew existed.

“It’s like a whole new universe, isn’t it?” Professor Finch said, his voice a gentle rumble from behind his spectacles. He was carefully arranging a collection of peculiar, almost geometric stones on his desk. “Your grandfather believed that numbers, much like language, held layers of meaning. Not just what they represented, but what they implied.”
