Chapter 8
Confronting the Cross
Dr. Finch publicly challenges Elara's work, creating a significant rift. She must decide whether to retreat or stand firm, embodying the era's intellectual crossroads.
The air in the lecture hall crackled with a tension that had little to do with the usual academic discourse. Elara stood at the podium, the manuscript’s worn pages a familiar weight in her hands, yet suddenly they felt alien, fragile. Before her sat a sea of faces, a mixture of intrigue and outright skepticism, but it was the face of Dr. Alistair Finch, front and center, that held her gaze. His expression was a carefully constructed mask of polite dismissal, a subtle sneer playing at the corners of his lips.
“So, Ms. Vance,” Finch began, his voice amplified by the microphone, carrying a gravitas that silenced the rustle of papers. “You propose that an ancient, frankly obscure, text holds the ‘key to all theories’? And that this key is somehow analogous to… a children’s puzzle?” He paused, letting the implied absurdity hang in the air. A ripple of knowing chuckles spread through the audience. “Furthermore, you suggest this ‘mathematical teacher’ within us, this statistical coordination, this… ‘Christ’s cross’ of our era, are all interconnected through a universally applicable numerical logic?”
Elara’s breath hitched. This was precisely the kind of reductionist attack she had braced herself for, yet hearing it articulated so baldly, so dismissively, was a blow. She had spoken of the manuscript, of the patterns, of the profound sense of order she had begun to perceive, but she had tried to frame it within the language of mathematics, of theoretical physics. Finch, however, seemed determined to strip away any nuance, to expose it as mere fantasy.
