The persistent drumming of rain against Elara’s window finally softened, then ceased altogether. A hush fell over Berlin, a silence so profound it felt like the city itself was holding its breath. Elara looked up from the notebook, her eyes blinking against the sudden, muted light that filtered through the clouds. The last drops clinging to the glass seemed to shimmer, each one a tiny, transient prism reflecting the pale sky. It felt like a release, not just for the city, but for her, too. The weight of Finch’s enigma, the constant, melancholic hum of the rain that had seemed to seep into her very bones, was finally lifting.
She found Detective Brandt nursing a lukewarm coffee at a small, nondescript café near the Spree, the same one where he’d first approached her, his skepticism a palpable presence in the damp air. Today, however, the gruffness in his posture seemed softened, the lines around his eyes less etched with suspicion and more with a weary kind of curiosity. He’d agreed to meet, a concession that spoke volumes about the persistence of his own unanswered questions.
“The rain’s stopped,” he observed, his voice a low rumble that seemed to blend with the distant murmur of the city waking up.
