Mezon's Message
The hum of the server room was a low thrum against Elara’s ear, a counterpoint to the frantic beating of her own heart. Liam, his brow furrowed in concentration, hovered over a bank of monitors, each displaying a cascade of alphanumeric sequences. They were deep within the bowels of a decommissioned telecommunications hub, a labyrinth of dusty conduits and forgotten technology that Liam had, with a surprising amount of ease, unlocked. This place, he’d explained with a wry smile, was a ghost in the machine, a forgotten node in the vast, interconnected web, and therefore, the perfect place to disappear.
“Anything?” Elara whispered, her voice tight with a tension that had become her constant companion. The scent of ozone and old dust filled her nostrils, a strange perfume for a woman who usually found solace in the musty aroma of ancient libraries.
Liam shook his head, his eyes never leaving the screens. “Still sifting. It’s like trying to find a single grain of sand on a beach by looking at the tide.” He ran a hand through his already disheveled hair. “The encryption on this MEZON feed is unlike anything I’ve ever encountered. It’s not just layered; it’s… organic. It shifts and reforms as you try to break it.”
