The chill that had settled in Elara’s bones wasn’t from the drafty attic room she’d commandeered as her temporary sanctuary. It was a deeper, more primal cold, the kind that seeped into the marrow when one realized the comfortable, predictable world they inhabited was merely a thin veneer over something vast and terrifying. Liam, his usual cynical edge softened by a grudging respect, was hunched over a battered laptop, the screen’s glow casting stark shadows on his earnest face. Outside, the London drizzle seemed to weep in sympathy.
“Still nothing concrete on the Schengen intel,” Liam murmured, his fingers flying across the keyboard. “Just the usual bureaucratic labyrinth. It’s like they’ve built a fortress of paperwork to hide behind.” He sighed, running a hand through his already disheveled hair. “But I did find a curious anomaly. A blip. A blind spot, if you will, in the BBC’s global monitoring feeds.”
