Chapter 14

Jesus Christ Sudoku

9 min read

The air in the abandoned observatory hummed with a silence that was more potent than any noise. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of moonlight piercing the gloom, illuminating the skeletal remains of a telescope that had once strained to touch the stars. Elara felt a strange kinship with it, a sense of being broken but still yearning for understanding. Liam, ever the pragmatist, had found this place on a hunch, a whisper of a forgotten research outpost in the remote highlands. It was a place where secrets might fester undisturbed.

“Still nothing, Elara,” Liam’s voice, low and edged with fatigue, echoed from the far side of the cavernous room. He was hunched over a portable scanner, its faint green glow painting his face in stark relief. “Just empty frequencies and the ghosts of old signals.”

This was the “Jesus Christ Sudoku,” the last one in the book, the one that had hummed with an almost unbearable intensity when she’d finally cracked its final layer. It wasn't about numbers at all, not in the way she’d understood them. It was about faith. About belief. About the desperate, foundational human need to find order in chaos, a pattern that transcended mere logic.
