Awakening to Shadows
Elara awoke with a gasp, her heart thrumming a frantic rhythm against her ribs. The room was still cloaked in the soft, pre-dawn grey, but the familiar, comforting darkness was gone, replaced by a gnawing unease. She sat up, pulling the quilt tighter around her shoulders, her eyes darting around the room as if expecting to find the source of her fear lurking in the shadows. Nothing. Just the usual, comforting shapes of her furniture, softened by the dim light. Yet, the feeling persisted, a cold tendril coiling in her stomach.
Last night’s sleep had been… different. Deeper, yes, the slumber she craved, but it had been a heavy, suffocating blanket rather than a gentle lullaby. And the dreams. They had been more vivid, more insistent than ever before. The shadowy figures, the fleeting glimpses of a place that felt both foreign and achingly familiar, they had been so real, so tangible, she could almost feel their icy touch.
She swung her legs out of bed, her feet finding the cool wooden floor. The silence of the house was usually a balm, a sign of the deep sleep she’d finally achieved. Tonight, it felt ominous. She padded to the window, pushing aside the heavy curtains. The garden was a watercolour of muted greens and greys, the dew clinging to the leaves like tiny diamonds. But there, at the edge of the woods, where the trees stood like silent sentinels, she saw it. A flicker of movement. Too quick to be an animal, too deliberate to be the wind.
