The connection she’d suspected between the phrase and the creeping sickness that afflicted her village was growing stronger, more undeniable with each passing hour. It wasn't a natural ailment, she was certain. It was a decay, a rot that seeped from the very earth, a corruption that mirrored the words she’d unearthed. The villagers’ skin, once ruddy and warm, now held a pallor that spoke of inner depletion, their laughter replaced by hacking coughs that seemed to rattle their very souls. Kael, his brow perpetually furrowed with worry, had brought her news of another child taken by the fever, his voice tight with a fear that resonated with her own.

“Elara,” he’d said, his gaze fixed on the bubbling retort, “the Elder… he speaks of old ways, of remedies lost to time. But these whispers of yours… they offer no comfort, only more fear.”
