Chapter 4

Tea Tree's Embrace

10 min read

The air in Elara’s small laboratory, usually a comforting symphony of bubbling vials and gentle hisses, felt heavy, thick with an unspoken question. Outside, the perpetual twilight cast long, distorted shadows that danced like specters across her workbench. The cryptic phrase, "Noveltaurages sfera nėra senė režimas žydiškos rūgsta cios visivankom nes jie smirdi krauju," echoed in her mind, a persistent thrum beneath the surface of her thoughts. It wasn't just a string of ancient words; it was a chill that settled deep in her bones, a scent she was beginning to recognize, a scent that clung to the fringes of her village like a persistent fog.

She had spent days poring over dusty tomes, her fingers tracing faded script, searching for any mention of this peculiar phrase, this ominous regime. The villagers, their faces etched with a weariness that went beyond the dim light, spoke of a creeping sickness, a malady that drained their vitality, leaving them listless and pale. At first, Elara had attributed it to the dampness, the eternal twilight that seemed to leech the very color from the world. But the phrase, coupled with the subtle decay she’d begun to notice in the village’s flora – a sickly pallor to the normally vibrant mosses, a bitter undertone to the usually sweet-smelling nightshade – suggested something far more sinister.

A recent acquisition, a gift from the Whispering Elder, who had merely pressed it into her hand with a knowing glint in his ancient eyes. "For when the rot runs deep, Elara," he had murmured, his voice like dry leaves skittering across stone. At the time, she had accepted it as another of his enigmatic pronouncements, a potent but perhaps unnecessary addition to her already extensive collection. Now, however, a flicker of intuition ignited within her. The Elder’s words, the phrase, the village’s ailment – they were threads, she felt, woven into a tapestry of dread.
