The air in the sanctuary, usually alive with the rustle of leaves and the soft clicks of raptor communication, seemed to hold its breath. The dust had settled, both literally and figuratively, after the harrowing ordeal. The poachers, or whatever shadowy figures had dared to trespass, were gone, driven back by a ferocity they hadn't anticipated. And at the heart of that ferocity, a new, undeniable rhythm had begun to beat.

Skye felt it in the tremor of her own muscles, a lingering echo of adrenaline mixed with a profound sense of relief. She stood a little apart from the others, her gaze drifting towards Kael. He was grooming his feathers, his movements slow and deliberate, but his eyes, when they flicked towards her, held a depth that resonated with something deep within her.
