The air, usually alive with the chirps and clicks of their kind, had taken on a different quality. It was a taut, vibrating stillness, the kind that precedes a storm or the rustle of unseen predators. Skye felt it first as a prickle along her spine, a sensation that had nothing to do with the familiar scents of damp earth and sun-baked stone that usually filled her world. This was something alien, something that whispered of intrusion.

She was perched on a sun-warmed boulder overlooking the central clearing, her keen eyes scanning the dense foliage that marked the sanctuary’s perimeter. Lyra, ever the perceptive one, sat beside her, her head cocked, listening. "Do you feel it too, Skye?" Lyra's voice was a soft murmur, barely disturbing the heavy quiet.

Skye nodded, her gaze fixed on a particular cluster of ferns where the shadows seemed to deepen unnaturally. "It's… wrong. The birds are silent. Even the insects are hushed." Her throat felt tight, a knot of unease tightening with every passing moment.
