The scent of lavender and old paper clung to Amelia Bellweather’s small living room, a fragrance both comforting and suffocating. Elias Thorne sat across from her, the worn leather of his notebook a familiar weight in his hands. He had seen many rooms like this over the years, rooms that held the ghosts of lives lived and abruptly ended, but this one felt particularly dense with an unspoken history. Amelia, frail and bird-like, her hands gnarled with age but still possessing a delicate tremor, watched him with eyes that had seen too much, too long. The sunlight, filtering through lace curtains, cast a pale, ethereal glow on her face, making her seem almost translucent.

“You found it, then,” she said, her voice a dry rustle like leaves skittering across pavement. It wasn't a question.

Elias nodded, his gaze steady. He’d spent weeks poring over Clara’s scant belongings, chasing shadows and whispers. The journal, tucked away in the false bottom of Clara’s old hatbox, had been the first tangible thread after so many dead ends. It had been a revelation, a chilling intimacy. He’d read Amelia’s youthful scrawl not as a child’s innocent observations, but as a desperate chronicle of a world she was forced to navigate far too soon.
