The leather of the journal was cool and supple beneath Elias’s fingertips, a stark contrast to the brittle, yellowed pages it held within. He turned it over, the embossed floral pattern worn smooth by time and countless touches. *Amelia Bellweather*, the inscription read, a childish scrawl that nonetheless held a certain gravity. This wasn’t Clara’s hand, the one he’d glimpsed in the hastily scribbled notes tucked away in the file, but her sister’s. Amelia, the quiet observer, the one who had supposedly seen nothing, heard nothing, knew nothing. Until now.

He settled back into the cramped attic space, the single bare bulb casting long, dancing shadows that seemed to mimic the uncertainty of his investigation. The air was thick with the scent of dust and forgotten things, a fitting atmosphere for unearthing buried truths. He opened the journal to the first entry, dated almost fifty years prior.
