Chapter 9
The Maze of Memory
A pivotal moment arrives as Lavina uncovers a hidden journal, its pages filled with her own handwriting from a life long past. The journal reveals the truth: her flight to the human world was an act of desperate preservation, a means to escape a betrayal so profound that it threatened not only her life but the stability of the entire realm. The deliberate erasure of her memories was a shield, a necessary sacrifice to allow her to rebuild and eventually return, stronger and wiser, ready to confront the architects of her downfall.
The weight of the crown settled upon Lavina’s brow, a cool, metallic kiss that felt both alien and intimately familiar. It was a sensation that echoed through her, a phantom limb of a queen she was only just beginning to understand. The throne room, vast and echoing with the hushed reverence of giants, titans, and fairies, hummed with anticipation. Centuries, Zelda had chirped, her voice like the tinkling of tiny bells, centuries they had waited. And here she was, a human woman, a queen by decree, by blood, by the very air she breathed in this land of impossibilities.
Each plush velvet cushion, each carved gargoyle leering from the high arches, seemed to hold a thousand stories, stories that were, impossibly, hers. As she sank onto the obsidian seat of power, a dizzying kaleidoscope of images flashed behind her eyes. A woman, regal and radiant, her laughter like sunlight on water, dispensing justice with a gentle hand. A feast, the hall ablaze with torchlight, the faces of her subjects etched with adoration. A quiet moment in a sun-dappled garden, a shared glance with a figure cloaked in shadow, a flicker of something akin to fear. Then, the darkness. The overwhelming urge to flee, to disappear, to become someone else entirely. And finally, the labyrinth, the suffocating darkness, the primal fear that had driven her until she stumbled into the human world, a world that offered only oblivion.
“Your Majesty,” Zelda’s voice, sharp and clear, cut through the haze of memory. The fairy, no larger than Lavina’s hand, perched on the arm of the throne, her iridescent wings a blur of emerald and sapphire. “The court awaits your command. But first, perhaps a moment of reflection?”
