Chapter 2

Whispers of the Willow

Zelda, a fairy with eyes like ancient amber, perches on the armrest of Lavina's throne. Her voice, a melodic whisper, recounts tales of Lavina's previous reign, painting a picture of a just and compassionate ruler. Yet, beneath the praise, Zelda’s words carry a subtle warning, hinting at unseen forces that once plotted against the human queen. She speaks of shadows that lurked in the periphery, their discontent simmering for generations. Lavina listens, a knot of unease tightening in her stomach, the fairy’s counsel a delicate dance between enlightenment and veiled manipulation.

The throne room hummed with a silence that was both ancient and expectant. Sunlight, strained through stained-glass windows depicting scenes of mythical hunts and forgotten battles, dappled the polished obsidian floor. Lavina, draped in silks the color of a twilight sky, sat upon the carved, imposing seat, the weight of it surprisingly solid beneath her. It was a throne that had waited centuries, a throne that had been hers, and yet, felt utterly alien.

Perched on the gilded armrest, like a jeweled hummingbird, was Zelda. Her wings, spun from moonlight and gossamer, shimmered with an inner light, and her eyes, the color of ancient amber, fixed on Lavina with an intensity that felt both admiring and calculating.

“Hale, Queen Lavina,” Zelda’s voice was a melodic whisper, like wind chimes caught in a gentle breeze. “We have waited centuries for your return.” She leaned closer, her tiny fingers tracing an invisible pattern on the armrest. “Your reign was a golden age, Your Majesty. Remember the Willow Grove, where you would sit for hours, listening to the woes of your subjects? You were so… giving. So compassionate.”

Lavina nodded, a faint ache settling behind her eyes. The words resonated, a faint echo in the chambers of her mind, but the images remained stubbornly out of reach. It was like trying to grasp smoke. She remembered the Minotaur, his rough but gentle touch, his fierce protection, the bewildering intimacy that had bloomed between them in the shadowed labyrinth. But a queen? A ruler of this land of giants and fairies? It was a concept as foreign as the air she now breathed.

“It was many lifetimes ago,” Zelda murmured, as if plucking the thought from Lavina’s mind. “You were so beloved. The people adored you. You brought peace and prosperity to every corner of this realm.” Zelda’s gaze drifted towards the grand, arched doorways, her voice dropping to a near inaudible pitch. “But not everyone welcomed the light, Your Majesty. There were those who festered in the shadows, their discontent a slow poison.”

A prickle of unease traced its way down Lavina’s spine. Shadows. The word hung in the air, heavy with unspoken threat. She’d felt them, even in the relative safety of the throne room, a subtle shift in the atmosphere, a fleeting darkness at the edge of her vision.

“They resented a human ruler,” Zelda continued, her amber eyes narrowing slightly, as if recalling a particularly bitter memory. “A mortal, wielding such power. They plotted, of course. Always plotting. They sought to undermine you, to sow discord. To… remove you.”

Lavina’s breath hitched. Remove her? The flashes that sometimes assailed her, fleeting and disorienting, were starting to coalesce. A sense of urgency, of desperate flight, of a need to disappear. Was that the reason she had sought refuge in the human world, shedding her crown and her memories like a snake sheds its skin?

“But you were too strong,” Zelda said, her voice regaining its sweet, almost saccharine tone. “Too loved. They could not touch you then. They retreated, waiting. Biding their time.” The fairy fluttered her wings, rising slightly from the armrest. “But no longer, Your Majesty. The time for waiting is over.”

Lavina’s fingers tightened on the armrest. She was a human in a land of legends, a queen with no memory of her kingdom, a ruler haunted by whispers of betrayal. She needed answers, solid, tangible proof of the life she had supposedly lived.

“Zelda,” Lavina’s voice was steady, though a tremor ran beneath the surface. “You speak of maps. Of books. Of the past. Where can I find them? I need to understand.”

Zelda’s smile was a slow, unfolding bloom. “Of course, Your Majesty. The archives are vast, filled with the chronicles of your reign. And some… are hidden. For safekeeping. I can guide you. We can uncover the truth together.”

The promise hung in the air, a delicate thread spun from honey and shadow. Lavina met Zelda’s gaze, a flicker of determination igniting within her. She would find the maps. She would read the books. She would unearth the secrets, the reasons for her flight, and the true nature of the shadows that still, undoubtedly, lurked. The journey back to herself, it seemed, was just beginning.
