The air in the council chambers had grown thick, heavy with an unspoken edict that clung to the polished obsidian like a shroud. Elara felt it the moment she stepped through the shimmering portal, a prickling unease that had nothing to do with the usual sterile chill of the space. It was a palpable shift, a tightening of the invisible reins that governed their lives. The usual hushed reverence of the council members was replaced by a brittle tension, their eyes, when they flickered towards her, held a cold, sharp glint that was new.
“Elara of Quadrant One,” the voice of the Overseer, a resonant, disembodied hum that seemed to emanate from the very walls, echoed through the chamber. It lacked the measured cadence of the council’s usual pronouncements, carrying instead a clipped, impatient edge. “You have been… disruptive.”
Elara’s heart gave a little leap, a nervous bird trapped in her chest. Kael, standing a respectful distance behind her, shifted his weight, his hand brushing against the hilt of his concealed blade. He was a silent sentinel, his loyalty a steady anchor in the swirling currents of uncertainty.
