The air in Lyra’s small, cluttered study felt thick with unspoken history, a tangible weight pressing down on Elara. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of sunlight that pierced the gloom, illuminating stacks of ancient scrolls and curious, geometric artifacts. Elara sat opposite Lyra, her heart a hummingbird trapped in her chest, while Kael remained a silent, watchful presence by the door, his gaze flicking between Elara and their mentor. Lyra’s weathered hands, usually steady as she traced the lines of a forgotten diagram, trembled slightly as she picked up a smooth, obsidian shard.

“It’s… difficult,” Lyra began, her voice a low murmur, almost a confession. “To speak of beginnings, when the ending is so starkly before us.” She turned the shard over and over, its polished surface reflecting the dim light like a captured star. “We were not always the architects of division, Elara. We were… dreamers.”

Elara leaned forward, her curiosity a potent force against the unease that prickled her skin. “Dreamers of what, Lyra?”
