It was a place most avoided, a pocket of the city where the sharp lines of the Quadrant Code seemed to soften, blurred by time and neglect. Here, the numbers felt less like decrees and more like echoes.

Her journey had been a series of tentative steps, each one guided by a fragment of a faded inscription on the artifact, a recurring symbol in Kael’s meticulously documented anomalies, a fleeting image that had flashed behind her eyes during moments of intense focus. It was a breadcrumb trail laid by history itself, and it had led her to this unassuming door, tucked between a crumbling bakery and a shop that sold what looked like antique navigational tools.

Hesitantly, Elara pushed the door open. A soft chime, like distant bells, announced her arrival. The interior was dim, lit by a single, ornate lamp that cast long, dancing shadows across shelves crammed with books, scrolls, and peculiar artifacts. In the center of the room, seated in a worn armchair, was an old woman. Her face was a map of fine wrinkles, her eyes, though clouded with age, held a startling clarity, like polished obsidian. Her silver hair was pulled back in a simple braid, and she wore a robe the color of twilight.
