Chapter 30
Episode 30
It was so quiet more so than usual I was told to go upstairs and change, We were going out again to eat and everything would be explained to Me and that all I was to do was to focus on graduation day.
The silence in the house was more profound than usual, a heavy blanket muffling any hint of the earlier tension. It wasn't the comfortable quiet of a shared afternoon, but a tense stillness that made the hairs on my arms prickle. My mother, her face a mask of forced calm, approached me with a gentle hand on my arm. "Emily, darling," she began, her voice softer than usual, "we need you to go upstairs and change. We're going out to eat again." She offered a small, unconvincing smile. "Everything will be explained to you then. For now," she squeezed my arm, her gaze earnest, "all you need to focus on is graduation day. Just a few more weeks, and then you'll be free." The words hung in the air, a promise of explanation that did little to soothe the knot of unease in my stomach. Yet, there was a strange sense of finality in her tone, a gentle but firm redirection that I felt compelled to obey. I nodded, a silent agreement to the unspoken terms of this fragile peace, and turned to ascend the stairs, the weight of the unknown pressing down with every step.
