A Test of Loyalty
Elara faces a difficult choice, a sacrifice that will test her commitment to both her town and the Draggifs. Her decision will determine the fate of their alliance and the future of the region.
The air in Oakhaven crackled with a tension thicker than any summer storm. It had been three days since the rival kingdom’s envoy had departed, leaving behind a chilling ultimatum that had settled like a shroud over the village. Elara stood on the edge of the forest, the familiar scent of pine and damp earth doing little to soothe the knot of dread tightening in her stomach. Elder Maeve’s words echoed in her mind, sharp and unyielding: "The envoy demands the return of their stolen prize. They speak of the youngling, Elara. They know you were involved."
Involved. The word felt like a brand. She had been involved. She had defied the elders, defied the ingrained fear that Oakhaven had nurtured for generations towards the Draggifs, and she had done it for a creature whose scales shimmered like emeralds and whose cries had pierced her soul. Now, that act of compassion had brought the wrath of a distant, brutal kingdom down upon them.
“They demand your surrender, Elara,” Elder Maeve had stated, her voice devoid of sympathy, her gaze hard. “They say that if you are handed over, and if the Draggifs agree to their terms of… *cooperation*… then Oakhaven will be spared the worst.”
